This Is Fashion People -- BE ORIGINAL!
Many of you know by now that IFB founder and author of The Coveted (the original!), Jennine Jacob, is dealing with a situation! It's a ridiculous situation that doesn't even come with a six pack (that was just for you, Jersey Shore fans)! I won't attempt to explain the entire legal situation (Jennine clarifies it in her post on January 27th), but apparently somebody else coveted the name "The Coveted" and acquired it to launch their own fashion blog. Now, if they were smart they would have started with a search from the get-go to see whether or not that name was already occupied (hyphen or no hyphen) -- at least in the same type of category. And if they were aware of fashion blogging at all, I dare say they should have been aware of Jacobs' The Coveted and IFB. Shame on them if they were "not in the know." I mean, IFB is one of the main reasons fashion bloggers even have a voice/platform today. So, it seems as though these "new coveted" or "faux coveted" mean girls are not only ungrateful, but they are taking advantage of the foundation that Jacobs' laid and benefiting from all of her hard work. Not cool. Sign the petition to support Jennine and the ORIGINAL Coveted. Also, WendyB started fundraising efforts to help out. Wendy is offering to donate to the cause, a generous amount from every sale made on her fun 'swear rings', OMG, LOL and NYC rings!! There is also the option to contribute monetarily without making a purchase. So, come on fashion bloggers, let's unite. Fight the fight! We all owe a lot to Jennine.
I Didn't Prepare A Speech...
I'd like to thank the Academy (and by Academy, I mean "Cupcake" from the blog Fashion Tarts) for nominating me for the Stylish Blogger Award! I can't believe I won in the midst of all the drama and turmoil I've gone through in the past couple of days. Did I actually manage to be stylish when I called the bitch at the Jet Blue counter an idiot? I guess so! I suppose that somehow I maintained a sense of style and a sense of humor through the ordeal because I've learned over the years that you have to laugh a little bit at ridiculous circumstances. If you can't beat 'em...
Anyway, for those of you familiar with this prestigious award, you know that it comes with the requirement to divulge sevensecrets facts about oneself. I hate to disappoint my taffetadarlings with the ultra boring life I lead, so I'm considering making up some juicy tidbits. Nah. I'm too damned honest, I'll just tell it like it is...
1. I have a problem with wide flaired pants. Always have. I like to torment my mother about this because I blame her for making me wear them when I was little. Nobody else was wearing them to school, just me. I hated them and swore I would never wear them once I had a say. I never have. As a designer, I've grown to appreciate a slight flair extending smoothly from a tapered knee on a gorgeous pair of Italian trousers, but I still tend to steer clear of wide legs.
2. As if that's not weird enough, I have an extreme phobia of worms. Now, I'm trusting all of you with this information and that means that you are not allowed to scare me or play tricks on me. I've literally darted into traffic to avoid ones I have spotted on the road while running on a drizzly day. In other words, I completely lose my rational mind and that can be a dangerous thing.
3. Despite my wimpy fears, I'm actually quite tough. I was a competitive swimmer from ten years old until seventeen. I even competed on a Masters team in NYC in my twenties. I've done triathlons, taught Spinning classes (for seven years) and run several races (though nothing over 8 miles). When I am passionate about something I am extremely driven. I can be quite serious and focused. I am hyper competitive.
4. I adore animals. I am a huge softy and would rescue hundreds of dogs and bunnies if I had the space and the funds.
5. I had a little, brown Netherland Dwarf bunny named Miles for nine years. She was a total house bunny and was even litter box trained. She was gorgeous, funny and super clean. I miss her. Oh yeah... I thought she was a he when I got her. Very hard to tell when they are little!
6. I knew I wanted to be a designer after reading my first Vogue in 1985. I bought the book, Couture for $15 at a Flea Market that same year and absorbed every bit of information I could. I also purchased a dress form for $15 and I still use it today. A store in the mall was going out of business and I begged my mom to drive me over to buy the form. I guess 1985 was a very pivotal year in my life.
7. Before I had dreams of becoming the next huge American designer, I wanted to be a comedian. I idolized Carol Burnett and Steve Martin. In fourth grade, I had a Steve Martin poster in my locker while most kids had Shaun Cassidy or Leif Garrett! I still think Carol Burnett's Gone With The Wind skit is one of the best ever. I'm convinced her curtain rod dress has influenced designers such as Hussein Chalayan!

No SEX and No City
Sex and the City is kind of a misleading title for a film that takes place in a desert where sex is pretty much forbidden! Nonetheless, sexy siren, Samantha managed to get a smidge of action, though not without repercussions. Samantha (Kim Cattrall), pretty much stole the entire movie with her sharp tongue (you can read into that one, people!) and her hilarious antics. One of the best scenes was when a strappingly handsome Danish man speeds over sand dunes in a jeep and approaches the women and their hotel errand boys in the desert. As the gorgeous Dane drives off, Samantha collapses onto the girls laps in a faint of lust. “Lawrence of my labia,” she sighs. I know some people thought that joke distasteful, but I found it absolutely hysterical not to mention pretty damn witty.
Forced puns and the type of cheese ball humor that I adore made the film light and fun. WendyB was telling me a story about a woman she knows who wrote a book about anorexia. “Is it a very thin book?” I asked. Ha ha. I’ll be here all night folks. Try the halibut, it’s fresh. This is the kind of necessary tongue-in-cheek that the film incorporates to avoid taking itself too seriously. Smart choice. After all, nobody is looking for drama in this movie. We got our share of that during the seven amazing years the show was on the air. At this point, it’s a party, a total girl’s night out, a fashion fest.
Last night, a posse of bloggers gathered to celebrate with dynamic jewelry designer, Wendy Brandes whose 18K yellow gold and diamond Cleopatra earrings appear in the film – one of the most iconic fashion films of all time! Shout out to WendyB! I suppose it was a coincidence that Samantha was wearing Ms. Brandes’ 4 ½” dangles in my favorite scene that I described above and we all let out a “Woohoo!” when they went in for a close up.
Like the fabulous New York girls that we are, we met for cocktails before heading over to the Ziegfeld. The ever so glamorous and generous WendyB passed out 10 pairs of her Cleopatra earrings for all of us to wear to the show. I don’t know if it was because I had thousands of dollars of gold and diamonds dangling from my ears or simply the fact that they made me feel beautiful, but I walked with my chin a little higher as I pranced along with the other girls to the theatre. Heads turned. Tourists took our photo. We stopped traffic. OK, we didn’t stop traffic, but nothing can stop a NYC cab flying up 6th Avenue!

After the film, we rallied the troops and made our way over to Benoit for more cocktails! MrB looked like a king surrounded with a harem of babes decked out in Cleopatra earrings. I thought at any minute someone may start fanning him or feeding him grapes! Actually, I have to give Wendy’s easy going husband kudos for dealing with all of us. And he was so proud of his wife; I think he would have worn a set of the Cleopatra earrings if Wendy had asked. Instead, he was outfitted with her brilliant Freud cuff links which suited him much better.
